Why visit kapaa, kauai? for starters, the east coast town boasts a seaside bike path, cute local shops and food trucks selling tacos, crepes and comfort food. Better yet, the laid-back burg was recently called one of america's prettiest towns by forbes magazine. Kapaa’s low-key selling points, from its ukulele store to its old-time architecture, helped land it on forbes’ 2013 list — the only hawaii destination to make the cut. A panel of travel experts praised kapaa’s spirit of hawaiiana, connection to history and proximity to the beach and ocean. Following are some visitor highlights in this pretty slice of polynesia.
Explore the Hiking Trails
Miles away from the traffic of oahu, or the tourist hordes of maui, the peaceful island of kauai is my favorite choice for pure relaxation. In fact, of all the hawaiian islands, many experienced travelers consider kauai to be the best island in hawaii, and here’s why. Nicknamed the garden island, kauai has it all – pristine beaches, lush rain forests, jagged emerald cliffs, and plenty of gorgeous hiking trails to keep an active traveler busy. But kauai is less developed than some of hawaii’s other islands. And that means you can soak up all that natural beauty without sitting in traffic or worrying about tour bus groups.
Hiking in waimea canyon state park is amazing. There’s a reason why they call it the grand canyon of the pacific, and the colors of the dirt and rocks are a very bright red color. Driving up to the top for a hike is amazing, and on the way down keep to the left at the y in the road. Soon you’ll come upon what looks like the surface of mars, with a cool waterfall thrown in. The kids lost their minds. Red dirt falls is cool and it’s fun to explore around, but it is quite a bit smaller than you might expect.
The royal coconut coast is excellent because of its close proximity to all the activities and options kauai has to offer. Enjoy activities in the ocean or mountains, both are easily accessible on the royal coconut coast. Couples celebrating their honeymoon or anniversary can find romantic spa retreats or exciting new adventures. Families of all ages will stay busy with the various options; there literally is something for everyone. From surfing to golfing , boat tours or a luau , you will not be disappointed with the selection that is nearby. Try it all or just lounge on the beach , the choice is yours.
How many days do you have? seriously, there’s no end to beautiful beaches here. Spend at least three days to explore the north shore beaches, drive to waimea canyon, and see some epic waterfalls. If you’re island hopping and visiting multiple islands, add more days to your kauai itinerary if wilderness and beaches are what calls you to hawaii. Plan extra days in maui instead if you’re looking to lounge poolside at premier resorts. Add time to your big island itinerary for hiking volcanos national park. Looking to visit pearl harbor? that’s on oahu.
