A NAVAL SERVICES HOMETOWN ON THE PACIFIC

The city is proud of its Navy heritage and is considered America's finest city. San Diego is not only home to the U.S. Navy's massive Pacific Fleet, but also to a surprising number of military bases. I've put together an overview of the San Diego Military Bases along with some helpful tips before you arrive.

 

It was always clear to me that San Diego beach had a major military presence when I served in the Navy. I couldn't come to this conference until late in my career when I was stationed back East and came here for a meeting. Beautiful scenery and a welcoming and embracing environment are what I love about this region.

 

In my quest to make San Diego my next navy home, I landed back-to-back tours here. We eventually moved away, but I promised my better-half we'd return once I retired, so we made the move back in late 2008.

 

A big Navy town with a great military heritage, San Diego has many military museums, memorials, and monuments like the USS Midway. As a result of the major presence of our other naval service, the U.S. Marine Corps, San Diego County has the highest population of military personnel in all of the country.

MAJOR SAN DIEGO MILITARY BASES

SAN DIEGO NAVY BASE

In addition to its name, 32nd Street Naval Station is the main homeport for the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Naval Base San Diego is currently home to over 50 vessels representing all sizes among its 213 individual commands.

 

The Coronado Naval Base is home to the Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI).

With the Amphibious Base Coronado and seven other Naval facilities in the area under one joint command, Coronado Naval Base is the Navy's largest aerospace-industrial complex.

 

NAVAL AMPHIBIOUS BASE (NAB)

There has been a compact base here since 1943. The area's coastal topography, beaches, and facilities enable amphibious, littoral, unconventional, and special warfare training. At NAB, the Navy's famed Navy Parachute Team, the Leap Frogs, and the prestigious Navy Sea-Air-Land (SEAL) Team are based.

 

Besides the Pacific Fleet's Commander Naval Surface Force, the base also houses most of the Pacific Fleet's Expeditionary and Special Warfare units.

 

MIRAMAR AIR STATION (MCAS MIRAMAR)

3rd Marine Aircraft Wing is based at Miramar. Camp Pendleton is home to the aviation element of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.

 

MCAS Miramar currently supports 15 fixed-wing, helicopter, and tilt-rotor aircraft squadrons, as well as numerous other command and logistics elements. In Miramar, you will also find the Miramar National Cemetery. Miramar Airshow takes place every October at MCAS Miramar.

CAMP PENDLETON MARINE CORPS BASE

USMC Camp Pendleton is one of the largest bases in the country and the largest on the West Coast. Near Oceanside, this vast military installation occupies over 125000 acres along the California coast in the northeastern part of our county. During World War II, it became a permanent Marine base for the 1st Marine Division.

 

There is no better location to train the Fleet Marine Force than Camp Pendleton. A Fleet Marine Force element and other assigned units are housed at this base, which provides training, logistical support, and housing. Commands include 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Logistics Group, and portions of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. It is home to the Marine Corps Air Station and the Naval Hospital Pendleton, two of its main tenants.

 

As a whole, there are more than 42,000 active-duty personnel stationed here, and 38,000 military families live in base housing complexes. Camp Pendleton provides vast areas for marines to practice their comprehensive air, sea, and ground assault training despite the massive Marine footprint. Only 20% of the Camp Pendleton land has been developed, keeping the Marine footprint small.

NAVAL BASE POINT LOMA

San Diego's historic and picturesque Point Loma area is the site of this consolidation of several Navy facilities. It features the Point Loma Submarine Base, Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command, Fleet Combat Training Center Pacific, and Naval Information Warfare Systems Command.

 

The Marine Corps Recruit Depot adjoins the bayside elements of Naval Base Point Loma. Observe submarine operations along the southern edge of the Point Loma peninsula, where you can see subs, dry dock vessels, and sea lion docks. Around 22000 Navy and civilian personnel are housed in the combined facilities. The National Cemetary of Fort Rosecrans is also located on Point Loma.

 

MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT (MCRD)

There is a MCRD located adjacent to San Diego International Airport as well as Liberty Station (as it was formerly known). Marine recruits from the western region of the country are trained at MCRD San Diego through grueling boot camp training. It trains more than 21000 recruits a year.

 

Spanish-Colonial designed facilities built in the 1920s are listed on the National Register of Historic Places in San Diego County. A Marine Corps Recruiter School, a Drill Instructors School, and the MCRD San Diego Command Museum are also located at the Depot.

 

A US COAST GUARD STATION based in San Diego is known as CGS SAN DIEGO (CGS SAN DIEGO).

Just across the street from the San Diego International Airport lies the compact CGS San Diego. U.S. Coast Guard enforcement of federal maritime law extends north from this strategic point to San Mateo Point.
