Which is the first thing you think of when you hear San Diego? What is crashing into the cliffs of Torrey Pines? The waves of the Pacific Ocean or the boats in the harbor? San Diego Zoo or Little Italy and its weekly farmers markets might come to mind.

 

Beyond the beach, the downtowns of San Diego's cities, you'll find there are some great parks in San Diego, particularly for residents looking for new ways to enjoy the outdoors.

 

You can find a list of the different types of county parks here, from day-use areas to preserves and camping grounds. There are other county-run community spaces we'll discuss, but here we'll focus on parks. Follow along to discover new parks!

 

Day-Use Parks

Waterfront Park

 

Throughout San Diego County, there are over 20 day-use parks where you can enjoy picnics, Frisbee games, walking your dogs, and more. You can take advantage of these to get outdoors, whether you have 30 minutes over lunch or a whole day.

 

Open Space Preserves

You can hike, run, bike, and explore the San Diego open space preserves, from canyons to parklands. All unique spaces, these preserves will give you an entirely different experience depending on which preserved you visit.

 

There are 25 different preserves, so there is something for everyone if you are able to find it. Your day outdoors deserves a preserve that is right for you.

Camping Parks

 

Camping is popular in 10 parks in San Diego County. There are many enjoyable places to visit whether it's for a single night, a weekend getaway, or even a whole week.

 

1. Agua Caliente

Wintertime is one of the most popular times to visit Agua Caliente, due to its beauty as well as the solitude and peace that it offers. An oasis in the desert, these natural-fed pools offer soothing mineral waters.

 

2. Dos Picos

Dos Picos offers steep mountain slopes with boulders and ancient oak trees that make it a remarkable camping spot.

 

3. Guajome

The rich natural land spaces of this place are located only minutes from the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the historic Rancho Guajome Adobe, Guajome Regional Park includes a small but beautiful lake.

 

4. Lake Morena

Located in San Diego's East County, Lake Morenas park is 3250 acres in size. Whether it's a picnic or a camping trip, this space is the perfect outdoor enthusiast haven.

 

5. Oakoasis

It is exclusively available to youth groups and includes county facilities. The park offers a picnic pavilion, an amphitheater, and a fire pit. A cabin is available for additional purchase if a group wishes to use it.

 

6. Potrero

It is a place that focuses on quiet solitude and unplugging that allows guests to reconnect with nature. In addition to Campo and Tecate, you will still be close to a variety of adventures and experiences.

 

7. Sweetwater Summit

In addition to being a great place to ride horses, Sweetwater Summit is for anyone who enjoys outdoor activities. There are plenty of golf courses nearby, and if you wish, you can even go down to Tijuana, Mexico.

 

8. Tijuana River Valley

The park's name comes from the valley it overlooks, and the park features trails of more than 20 miles, a nature education area, campsites, and even yurts (which are the first in San Diego County).

 

9. Vallecito

Vallecito makes for an excellent camping spot if you want to venture into the Anza-Borrego Desert. A reconstructed sod Butterfield Stage Station makes for a unique experience in this space.

 

10. William Heise

The William Heise Park, also called Heise, might just be the most beautiful park in the county. This camping area boasts 900 acres of mountain forest, proximity to Julian, and access to nearby food and shops.

Other San Diego County Sites

Besides maintaining historical sites and sports facilities, the San Diego Parks and Recreation Department also manages gardens, community centers, and sports fields.
